Neck Liposuction Basics

Why would you consider neck liposuction? It’s because your face says a lot about you as a person. In many ways, it provides others with a lasting impression of which you are, how you feel and what you think. And because of this, many obese people are affected by complexes because of a fat face. Diet and exercise can help many areas of the body, but nothing seems to affect those fatty deposits in the cheeks, chin jaw line or neck. Those areas don't usually respond to diet or exercise. And especially in the neck’s case, there is nothing that can be done for solving that problem. So neck liposuction is an excellent option, and can make a dramatic change in the way you look by removing the excess fat from your neck.

Neck liposuction involves fewer complications, fewer scars, avoids the dangers of general anesthesia, has a more rapid recovery, lower costs, and typically gives a more natural appearance. In cases of neck liposuction a tightening of the muscle in the neck, the platysma is often performed. This is called a platysmaplasty and often contributes significantly to greater neck definition and less sagging. Women who have local deposits of subcutaneous fat in the neck and who have excessively wrinkled skin will often get better results from neck liposuction combined with either a laser resurfacing or a chemical peel. For younger women who have good skin elasticity, a neck liposuction alone can also produce dramatic improvement and is a much simpler and safer procedure.

Not all patients are good candidates for neck liposuction. For some patients a face lift would be the preferred procedure, while for other patients liposuction would be best. Facelift may be preferred by a woman who has large folds of skin on the neck with little subcutaneous fat. The phrase neck liposuction is somewhat misleading. To be more specific, neck liposuction in this general area involves the area below the chin, and the back of the neck. Neck liposuction is usually the simplest, safest, and least expensive way to treat this cosmetic problem. A neck with too much subcutaneous fat can make a person’s face appear formless and esthetic less. This type of fat deposit is usually the result of an inherited tendency that is resistant to exercise and diet. Neck liposuction using very small tubes or cannulas can correct this cosmetic problem totally by local anesthesia and with virtually no scars. The tiny incisions used for neck liposuction do not require sutures. Absorptive pads are applied to absorb the drainage and are held in place by an elastic compression garment. An elastic compression garment is worn after neck liposuction during the first 18 to 36 hours after surgery. As soon as the drainage has ceased, a compression garment is no longer necessary. In the old days of neck liposuction, surgeons required that patients wear a compression garment for two to six weeks, but there is no evidence that this prolonged compression provides any benefit.

Anyone who has problems with unpleasant fat deposits on the back of the neck or below the chin should consider a neck liposuction. The fact that can be inexpensive and implies few or no risk at all, is a very convincing reason to get a neck liposuction if you want to improve the aspect of your face and neck, altogether.
